Going Pink in October
Premier Mushrooms is a proud sponsor of the City of Hope Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As a result of Amber Spence's courage and willingness to share her story, we will donate $1,000 to breast cancer research in her name. Look for our special "Pink Tills" at your local retailer this October.
Amber Spence, Breast Cancer Survivor
My name is Amber Spence. I am 47 years old and a breast cancer survivor. Unfortunately, my story is not unusual. An annual mamogram followed by a call notifying me of an abnormal screening. I was scheduled two days later for a recheck and immediately scheduled for a needle biopsy. I was then called to schedule a meeting with my family physician to discuss the results of the biopsy. I knew at this point something was terribly wrong. Without preamble he informed me that I had both lobular and ductile breast cancer. Shock, nausea, and terror immediately overtook me but determination, purpose, and faith swiftly carried me forward.
The next twelve months included five surgeries while at the same time operating the family business I owned with my sister. With the economy in turmoil, little time was left for healing. The physical challenge was lessened I believe due to my strong commitment to overall physical fitness. My weekly routine of workouts combined with a deep sense of spiritual well being has certainly paid dividends.
For me, it was imperative to focus my efforts on keeping my mind, spirit and soul in balance which enabled me to feel the healing and remain ever mindful of the need to be positive at all times. The negative feelings of doom and despair have no place in this battle.
It is my hope for anyone affected by this disease that they look first to our creator for the strength and guidance only he can provide and second that they continue to live each day with the confidence that they too can be a survivor.
