Sustainability covers a broad range of disciplines within a business. Some of the ones commonly discussed are energy efficiency, recycling and renewable energy. However, there are still other areas that can be capitalized on to reduce the environmental impacts of a business. That is IT.
The formal definition of Information Technology is, “the application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data, often in the context of a business or other enterprise."
Premier Mushrooms is inherently a very technologically friendly operation and has incorporated it into many of our existing practices. However, there are processes and activities that can be streamlined to better reach our sustainability goals.
In order to advance these goals, Premier Mushrooms hired a full-time IT Coordinator. They collaborate with all levels of the organization and seek to identify opportunities to improve our operational efficiency. This includes a focus on both the hardware and software side of our organization, which are both equally important.
One of the first projects being undertaken is to transition to a paperless inventory and work order processing system. This will eliminate a significant amount of paper on an annual basis, thus reducing our farm’s environmental footprint year after year.
As technology continues advancing, the intersection of IT and sustainability will continue to growing. This presents a great opportunity to stay ahead of the curve and continue making positive changes that are within our means and can be sustained for the long-haul.
Happy New Year!
